Therapy with Heather (she/her/hers)

Therapy is a courageous process that I know both personally and professionally.

It helps us become unstuck, freeing us to move closer towards our goals and who we want to be. It allows us to begin healing from our past and transforms how we feel and act in our current relationships. It gives us support in times of crisis and stress, allowing us to become even more resilient in the future. And it frees us from habitual patterns that cause suffering in our lives.

As a therapist, I am known to be compassionate, direct and honest. I pay attention and engage in a genuine relationship with my clients, which can mean saying the hard things. I study myself and my work just as diligently and with just as much humor, love and care. I believe as humans, we heal, grow and know ourselves through our relationships.  We will work together to build an authentic relationship that feels supportive and accepting even when what is being discussed is difficult. I believe as humans, we heal, grow and know ourselves through connection in healthy relationships. As such, we will focus on our relationship as well as on your relationships outside of therapy.

I value diversity, equity and inclusion and actively participate in training, activities and self-interrogation to be anti-racist and aware of my internalized oppressive and biased thinking. As a therapist, I work to provide care that acknowledges differences and is aware and empowering of people of all experiences, race, ethnicity, culture, ability, neuro-diversity, gender, sexuality and all bodies. About Heather

I had the privilege of working with teens and their families for eight years in inner city Houston before moving to Austin for social work graduate school. I spent a lot of that time in Houston as a weekly volunteer at Planned Parenthood, working both in the clinic and out at events or lobbying. Once in Austin and in school, I worked as a mental health provider for pregnant and parenting teens in Round Rock, TX. I then trained at the University of Texas Counseling and Mental Health Center as a group and individual psychotherapist with a focus on the treatment of anxiety, couples work and trauma recovery. Following graduation, I worked for the Seton Mind Institute as a group therapist for individuals dealing with high acuity mental health concerns (anxiety, depression, bipolar I and II disorder, anger issues, and personality disordered behavior). I then intensively trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and began providing mindfulness-based skills-building groups for adolescents and their families. I started my private practice in the summer of 2011.

I love the life-long learner aspect of my career and participate actively in weekly consultation and therapy. I graduated from the Center for Group Studies in New York, which is an intensive group training program focused on using modern analytic principles. I am a member of the Austin Group Psychotherapy Society and have trained as a PACT couples therapist (psychobiological approach to couples therapy.) I also completed training in providing DBT Prolonged Exposure treatment, which is a highly effective and researched treatment for reducing PTSD.When I am out of the office, I like working on my house, living in the wilderness, and  connecting with my chosen human and sweet pet family.

When I am out of the office, I like working on my house, living in wilderness, and cherish time with my family of friends and my dog.
